Eight teams with one goal |

«The interdisciplinary approach allows us to understand the problem of Buruli ulcer holistically so that any intervention put in place would not only address scientific concerns but also meet the needs of all segments of the population.»
Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Ghana
Eight leading research teams on four continents have set themselves the shared goal of bringing this insidious disease under control as quickly as possible. They are working toward this goal according to a coordinated plan focusing on the following main topics:
- Transmission
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
- Socio-cultural and economic aspects
The cooperation and formation of partnerships between the research teams and local and well established partners from affected areas is hugely significant. The latter have many years’ experience and expertise in dealing with Buruli.
These partnerships ensure the ideal transfer of knowledge and data, and facilitate the testing of new research results directly on the ground. Especially with regard to the disease’s treatment and prevention, it is important that the circumstances and needs of the affected population is precisely analyzed, evaluated and included in the research. This knowledge, too, is safeguarded by the local consortium partners who are familiar with local conditions and associated with the health organizations in their areas.
