Dr. Um Boock has dedicated his life to the fight against neglected diseases, as Prof. Dr. Marcel Tanner, Foundation President and Director of the Swiss Tropical Institute pointed out in his laudatory speech, and for years has also been actively involved in the research and fight against Buruli Ulcer. With great skill he has managed within just a few years to raise awareness in various circles for this insidious disease while also improving the health care system in Cameroon. He has set new national and international standards for those healthcare systems that have few financial resources but still manage to achieve optimal results. Dr. Um Boock has always made his wide knowledge and extensive experience available to research and has generously shared it with the WHO and national and international organizations. At the same time, he involved the local population in his work and has always been mindful of the needs of the poor.

What does this award mean to you?
It is a great honor to receive this award. This award is a great motivation for me to continue in the fight against Buruli Ulcer, a disease which is a huge health problem for Cameroon. Each year approximately 700 new cases are registered, primarily children.

What are the next steps in your plans?
With the newly launched “Stop Buruli”-initiative, we will continue to push ahead with research. It is great that research is carried out simultaneously on the four different axes, “transmission”, “diagnosis”, “treatment” and “socio-cultural and economical aspects”.
In Ayos in Cameroon, we will continue with our research on treatment, while we also want to find out more about relapse mechanisms after antibiotic treatment.
Currently, we are also working on the mapping of transmission in the various affected areas, which will hopefully provide us with new insight on the transmission mechanisms.
